In the "Add/Edit Custom Object" page, what do the different settings mean?
When you add or edit a custom object - the "Add Custom Object" and "Edit Custom Object" pages will show several fields.
Most of these fields/settings are self-explanatory. Here is an explanation of some settings that may not be immediately obvious:
Display this object using:
Separate Tab:
A separate tab will be added at the top for this custom object.

A separate tab will NOTbe added for this custom object. However, a "Related ______" section will be displayed for this object under other objects.
Example:
Let us say you create a custom object named "Issues" and select this option. Then let us say you check the "Requirements" checkbox in the Objects whose related lists this object should be displayed in section described below, and proceed to create the object.
In this case, a tab will not be added for "Issues". However, a "Related Issues" section will be displayed in Requirement Details pages.
FYI: This means, the only way to add new issues would be to add them from the Requirement Details page of a requirement.
Separate Tab -plus- Related Lists in Other Objects:
Selecting this option will combine the results described for the two options above.
Configure "Related Lists":
This setting is applicable ONLY if you selected the second or third radiobutton in the Display this object using section described above.
Objects whose related lists this object should be displayed in: In this setting, you will select the checkboxes for those objects under which you'd like the "Related ______" section for this object to be added.
Example:
For the scenario described in the example above, you will check the "Requirements" checkbox in this setting.
This will cause a "Related Issues" section to be displayed in Requirement Details pages.
Columns to display for this object in "Related Lists": Here you can define the columns that should be displayed in the "Related ______" section for this object.
IMPORTANT: This can only be done when editing an object, it cannot be done when creating a new object.
Please note that these settings will be ignored if you select the first radiobutton in the Display this object using section described above.
Enable SmartViews:
Selecting this option will enable you to create and manage SmartViews for this custom object.
Deployment Status:
In Development:
If you select this option, the custom object will be displayed only for "administrator" users. This option is recommended when you are in the process of creating and testing a new custom object.
Deployed:
If you select this option, the custom object will be displayed all users. This option is recommended only after you complete creating and testing the new custom object.
